Avocado & Tomatoes

Gotcha! No recipe here! Well kinda, but more of a ‘this is one of my favourite breakfasts’ and ‘if you’re not enjoying this for breakie then you’re missing out’ post. Or just a reminder incase you haven’t enjoyed it for awhile 🙂

THE AMAZING AVOCADO – (Also know as an ‘Alligator Pear’). If you’d like to know more about why avocados are so good for us there is a fantastic page here with heaps of nutitional facts about avocados….a great read, prepare to be Impressed, they really pack a healthy punch! Since the 1970’s the Hass is the most popular variety of avocado. In the 1930’s the Hass tree was discovered in California in the backyard of a mailman named Rudolph Hass. In 1935 the very smart Mr Hass patented his tree and all Hass avocado trees can trace their lineage back to that one tree.

MAGICAL TOMATOES – We all know tomatoes are good for us too, but did you know that the tomato plant originates from Central America and is from the family of Nightshade plants (potato, tobacco, eggplant, chili peppers)?! It was domesticated around 500 BC by the Aztecs and not only eaten, but also used as a hallucinogenic (hmmm…..I wondered where all those strange voices come from). In the19th century the tomato was called ‘The Apple of Love’ in France and ‘The Apple of Paradise’ in Germany, and in England it was considered to be poisonous!

Avocado & Tomatoes

Avocados and tomatoes are great together without bread (Did I really just say that!….Can’t believe I just said that) or on a toasted bagel, ciabatta, focaccia or my fav, the most loaded, seediest bread I can find! I garnish the plate with some basil pesto that’s mixed with a bit of extra virgin olive oil (enough added so that I can ‘drizzle’ it) and some fresh baby spinach, basil or coriander (cilantro) leaves. Then after prettily placing the Avo and tomatoes on the buttery hot toast, I drizzle it with more basil pesto/oil and then finish it off with a healthy cracking of black pepper (actually LOTS!)  ðŸ™‚

Of course tomatoes taste the best when they are organic, fresh and vine ripened from your garden, but if you aren’t an avid gardener or couldn’t get to the farmers market, try these…..oven roasted vine ripened (truss) tomatoes or…..

…..slow-roasted, basil pesto tomatoes.
